Philippe Jordan

Philippe Jordan ( born October 18, 1974 in Zurich ) is a Swiss conductor.

Life

Jordan was born as the son of conductor Armin Jordan and the dancer Käthe Herkner, his sister is the actress Pascale Jordan ( b. 1977 ).

At the age of six he started piano lessons, and two years later he became a member of the Zurich Boys' Choir. At 11 he began playing the violin, and then with 16 to take a degree in piano pedagogy, which he completed successfully. Then he studied at the Zurich Musikhochschule music theory and composition with the Swiss composer Hans Ulrich Lehmann and continued his piano studies with Karl Engel continued.

After studying Jordan accepted a position as assistant to Jeffrey Tate in Aix -en- Provence and at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris with Richard Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung. But in 1994 he was obliged to Ulm, where he soon rose already principal conductor. The final recognition as a conductor of world renown he achieved through his dedication to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, where he worked as an assistant of Daniel Barenboim (1998 to 2002).

From the season 2001/ 02 he was chief conductor of the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra and the Graz Opera House. Here he conducted acclaimed productions of Eugene Onegin ( Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky ), Don Carlos ( Verdi ), Parsifal ( Richard Wagner) and Otello ( Giuseppe Verdi). Due to disagreements with the Opera artistic director and political leaders he left Graz in summer 2004.

Since the season 2009/10 he has been musical director of the Opéra National de Paris. In addition, he took over from the season 2006/ 07 the post of principal guest conductor at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden.

With the beginning of season 2014/15 is Philippe Jordan Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
