Black pipe bamboo ( Phyllostachys nigra)

The black pipe bamboo ( Phyllostachys nigra ) is a species of bamboo from China, which is noticeable by its black straws. He was brought to Europe by 1823, making it probably the first bamboo, which reached Europe.

Description

It makes short runners, making the stalks in loose groups. They are 3 to 10 feet tall and can reach diameter 1-4 cm, stand upright and drooping at the tips. The internodes are 25 to 30 inches long and have about 3 millimeters thick walls. They are ripped something yellow and brown powdered white below the node. The Halmscheiden are striped green, ciliate and hairy brown at the base. The ears are large and are excreted into the leaf blade. The leaves are 3-4 inches long and 0.8 to 1.8 centimeters wide and are twos and threes at the ends of branches. They are fitted dark green, glabrous and papery thin and with three to six pairs of nerves. Auricles and bristles are poorly developed or absent.

Distribution and habitat requirements

The natural range of the species is located in Hunan province in China. However, it is also cultivated in other areas of China and in many other countries. In Europe, the species was probably the first to introduce bamboo to 1823.

Under natural conditions, the Black bamboo tube is found in open forests on slopes and in valleys, and reaches altitudes 1100-1200 meters.

System

The black pipe Bamboo is a species in the genus Phyllostachys. This is the subtribes attributed Shibataeinae in the tribe Bambuseae.

There are at least five varieties are distinguished:

  • Phyllostachys nigra var nigra: initially with green stems that turn red-brown to brown-black later
  • Phyllostachys nigra var Henonis: with continuous green stalks
  • Phyllostachys nigra var Boryana: initially with green stems on which later formed black spots
  • Phyllostachys nigra var megurochiku: with green stems and black sulcus
  • Phyllostachys nigra var Mejiro: black stalk with yellow sulcus

The epithet nigra of the scientific name comes from Latin and means black; it refers to the color of the stalks.

Use

The black bamboo tube is used as an ornamental plant. The young shoots are edible but not very tasty. In Beijing Black bamboo tube is the dominant plant of a 48 -hectare park, the " black pipe bamboo park " in the road district of the city Zizhuyuan Haidian District.
