The Piacenza railway station (Italian: Stazione di Piacenza) is the station of the northern Italian town of Piacenza. It is operated by the Company CentoStazioni SpA, a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato SpA, .

The station is located on the railway line Milano -Bologna and is the starting point of the main train to Alessandria and the branch line to Cremona. The routes are operated by the RFI. The train station is located north - east of the city center, between the city and the river Po.

History

The station was opened in 1859 simultaneously with the Piacenza -Bologna section of the railway line Milano - Bologna. A few months later, the road to Alessandria (and therefore Turin or Genoa) has been released. 1861 Finally, the bridge was completed over the Po, bringing the whole distance Milano -Bologna was passable. Piacenza became an important railway junction.

In 1933 the railway line Piacenza - Cremona, which should provide an important east -west connection through the Po Valley, opened. However, they reached only a local significance.

1937 a new station building, designed by architect Roberto Narducci in the style of New Objectivity ( " rationalist " ) was built.

1932-1967 existed next to the FS station of the local train station of SIFT, which operated the electric local train Piacenza Bettola and numerous interurban streetcars.

Operation

The station is operated together with commuter and regional trains, but also of long-distance trains of categories Intercity, Euro Star City and Intercity Notte. Daily use about 260 trains the train station that is frequented annually by around five million passengers.

Accidents

On January 12, 1997, a Pendolino ETR 460 derailed about 200 meters down the road from Milan to Rome from the station, as a result of breakage of the connection between the drive motor and the wheels. The accident claimed eight lives and caused extensive damage to the rail infrastructure. Also on board the train, there was the former Italian President Francesco Cossiga.
