Pielinen

Located in the far east of Finland L.Pielinen [ piɛlinɛn ] (Finnish also Pielisjärvi ) is 894.2 km ² the fifth largest lake in the country. It is approximately 93 km long and at its widest point about 28 km wide. In Pielinen there are about 2000 islands. The main tributary, the Lieksanjoki, empties in Lieksa on the eastern shore of the lake in the Pielinen. The Pielisjoki drained the lake to the south Pyhäselkä which is part of the Saimaa lake system.

On the western shore is the famous Koli National Park with the same name Koli, from which one can enjoy a beautiful view over the lake. On the northern tip lies the idyllic small town Nurmes, on the eastern shore of the city Lieksa.
