Pier Paolo Vergerio

Pietro (also: Pier) Paolo Vergerio (* 1498 in Koper, † October 4, 1565 in Tübingen) at first he was a Roman Catholic bishop, a Lutheran theologian and reformer of Italian origin.

Life and work

Vergerio was in what was then the Republic of Venice belonging place Koper ( Koper in Slovenia today ) was born. In Padua he studied law and in 1530 accompanied the legate Campeggi to Augsburg. Pope Paul III. sent him in 1535 again to Germany to move the German princes to attend a council at Mantua.

Here he learned at Wittenberg Martin Luther personally know and studied, after he had returned to his homeland, whose writings to refute them.

On 5 May 1536, he was appointed Bishop of Modrus, Bishop was on September 6, 1536 in his native city, he gradually became a staunch supporter of Protestantism. In 1548 he finally declared, warned by the fate of Francesco Spiera, in a font that it complies with the Protestant doctrine. He resigned on July 3, 1549 as Bishop of Koper.

After taking in the Grisons Synod he was a Protestant pastor of Vicosoprano Bergell. 1553 he was appointed the duke of Württemberg Christoph to Tübingen, where he wrote several treatises against the papacy. Also in Tübingen, he helped the Slovenian Protestant reformer Trubar (German: Primus Truber ) in its efforts to find a translation of the New Testament in the Slovenian language.
