Pieter Aertsen

Pieter Aertsen, called Lange Pier because of its size (* 1509 in Amsterdam, † 1575 ibid ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

Was Aertsen early pupil of the painter Allart Claesz in Amsterdam. After his apprenticeship, he wandered for a long time by the Netherlands. About 1530 Aertsen settled as a freelance painter in Antwerp and was incorporated in 1535 as a full member of the St. Luke's Guild. In whose members directories it has operated under a " Langhe Peter, shields ". From this time he signed his works with a " trident " and his initials.

When he was awarded the 1542 Antwerp civil rights, he was able to marry a relative of his pupil Joachim Beuckelaer, Kathelijne Beuckelaer in the same year. Until 1556 Aertsen was in Antwerp and painted mostly genre scenes and religious subjects. Since most of his clients from Amsterdam came, moved Aertsen 1555 with his family resides there as well. He died there in 1575 at the age of about 66 years and was buried on June 3, 1575.

The painter Aert Pietersz, Dirck Pietersz Pieters and Pieter were his sons.

The genus of the market created by Aertsen and kitchen pictures influenced the Flemish still life painting prevail. Many of his altarpieces, however, have already been destroyed in the 1566 iconoclasm; but also in later wars, large parts of his artistic career were destroyed.
