Pietro Pariati

Pietro Pariati ( born March 27, 1665 in Reggio Emilia, Italy, † October 14, 1733 in Vienna) was an Italian poet and librettist.

Life

Pariati was first secretary Rinaldo, Duke of Modena. After a stay in Madrid in 1695, he spent three years in prison. From 1699-1714 he lived in Venice, where he began writing libretti, first in collaboration with Apostolo Zeno, and later alone. He specialized in comedies, tragi-comedies and interludes, often by older templates ( Plautus, Moliere, Cervantes ). Among the composers who set to music his lyrics, were Albinoni, Caldara, Gasparini, Lotti and Porpora.

1714 Pariati Poet Laureate Charles VI. in Vienna. Until 1729 he wrote here 13 oratorios, cantatas 15 and 14 stage works for the festivities of the Imperial family, usually set to music by Johann Joseph Fux court composer. The most famous was the " festa teatrale " Costanza e Fortezza (1723 ). For the Court Theatre, he revised earlier works, wrote libretti new tragic and comic and continued the collaboration with Zeno continued, who also resided since 1718 in Vienna.

Pariatis successor as court poet Pietro Metastasio was 1729.

Style

Pariatis comedy style is characterized by rapid pace, serene dialogue and a penchant for extreme choice of words. His serious pieces have a tendency to parody and social criticism.
