Pionsat

Pionsat is a commune with 1098 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Puy -de- Dôme in the Auvergne region. It belongs administratively to the district of Riom and Canton Pionsat whose capital it is.

Geography

The municipality is located in the countryside Combraille, around 25 kilometers south of Montlucon and 50 kilometers north- west of Clermont- Ferrand, on the border of Allier. Neighboring communities of Pionsat are:

  • Virlet in the north,
  • Le Quartier in the east,
  • La CELETTE in the southeast,
  • Saint- Maignier in the south,
  • Saint- Hilaire in the west and
  • Saint- Fargeol in the northwest.

The town itself is situated on the right bank of the river Boron, which is in this section also called Ruisseau de Pionsat. It drains in a westerly direction, and finally flows as a right tributary of the Cher. South of the town is the lake Etang de Durat, fed by the Ruisseau de la Farge and drains into the Boron.

History

The Treasure of Pionsat is a significant discovery of ancient coins, which took place in 1852 in the municipality.
