Piquepoul

Piquepoul Blanc is a white grape variety in the French wines of Châteauneuf -du -Pape and Tavel and in the Spanish DO Alella, Empordà, Catalunya and Pla de Bages is approved. In addition, it is recommended for the entire South, but hardly used. In appearance it occurs in the white wine Picquepoul de Pinet ( Picpoul de Pinet also called ) from the region of the Coteaux du Languedoc. This wine contains at least 70 % of Piquepoul Blanc.

The grape produces flowery, very acidic wines. The acidity owes its name to the vine; Piquepoul translates lip biter or lip glasses.

Before the phylloxera infestation it was very common in use and was often blended with the grape Clairette Blanche. In the region of Armagnac she was the branch most frequently used; today it is replaced by the mass support Ugni Blanc.
