Pius Bonifacius Gams

Pius Bonifacius Gams OSB ( born January 23, 1816 in Mittelbuch, † May 11, 1892 in Munich; Given Name: Boniface Gams ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian, priest and church historian.

Life

Gams completed 1826-1834 high school in Biberach an der Riss and Rottweil, then studied from 1834 to 1838 Philosophy and Theology at the University of Tübingen. In 1838 he was awarded the prize of the theological faculty and the first homiletic price. At the study then he entered the seminary of Rottenburg and was ordained a priest on September 11, 1839 there by Bishop Johann Baptist von Keller. He was assistant priest in Aichstetten, 1840 in Gmünd and then from 1841 in Horb am Neckar. In the years 1842-1843 he made a scientific journey from Munich, Berlin and Paris. After his return in April 1844, he was parish administrator in Wurmlingen and in December 1844 Professoratsverweser in Rottweil. In 1845 he moved to the Latin school in Gmünd.

On May 1, 1847 Gams was appointed professor at the theological- philosophical College in Hildesheim, where he taught philosophy and general world history. There he was, among others, in addition to co-founder and co-editor of Wenceslaus Mattes Theological monthly. The Catholic theological faculty at Tübingen awarded him an honorary doctorate ( Dr. theol. Hc ). In addition to his teaching activity and scientific activities, he helped in Hildesheim also in pastoral ministry and founded 1853, published in Hildesheim Catholic Sunday paper.

In August 1855, he resigned the professorship and entered on September 29, 1855 in the Abbey of St. Boniface in Munich in the Benedictine Order one. On 5 October 1856 he passed the profession. In the Order, he was given the name Pius, where he published his works under the name of Pius Bonifacius. In the Order, he was a preacher, and in the pastoral care of the parish of St. Boniface. He also held the offices of a novice master, Subpriors and Priors. In addition, he maintained his academic work upright. In the years 1864 and 1865 he made an extended research trip to Spain. In his last years became blind.

In addition to numerous essays he wrote a regular contributor to encyclopedias, he has written, among other items for the General Church Lexicon of Joseph Aschbach, which appeared from 1846 to 1850 in Frankfurt am Main.
