The Piz Ela (also Piz Aela ) is a 3,338, 7 m above sea level. M. tall mountain in the Albula Alps in the canton of Graubünden between Berguen Savognin. It has the shape of a huge cathedral with a curved in a wide arc dome. But despite this broad dome shape he is a crowned with sharp cutting narrow ridge, which is best seen when looking at the mountain from the southeast. The first ascent was held by Alex Flury, Peter and Jenny Jenny George on July 17, 1865. After the Marmolada (Dolomites) is the summit the second highest peak of dolomite and dolomite thus the highest summit in the Swiss Alps. About 30 m below the Südostgrates is an opening in the rock, the Ela - hole.
The Piz Ela, thanks to its dominance, especially towards the west, an extraordinary long-distance views of the Bernese and Valais Alps ( Eiger, Mönch, Finstaarhorn, Aletschhorn or 148.56 km away Joderhorn ).
The Ela hut at 2'252 m above sea level. M. serves as a base for an ascent that is relatively demanding on all routes. The mountain is located in the Parc Ela, opened in 2006, a 600 -square-kilometer nature park.
In recent years, traces of prosauropods and sauropods have been discovered in the main dolomite. They date from the late Triassic period and are about 210 million years old.
Location
The Piz Ela is the highest elevation of Bergüner sticks, a subgroup of the Albula Alps. The Piz Ela separates the easternmost Albula valley from the west located above stone. At the summit, the municipal boundaries of Berguen, Tinizong - Rona and Filisur meet.
Among the neighboring peaks of Piz Ela include the Piz d' Uglix, the Piz Spadlatscha, the Piz digl Barba Peder, the Piz Rugnux that Tschimas because Tschitta, the Piz Val Lunga, the pizza Grossa and the Tinzenhorn.
To the east of the summit wearing the otherwise outspoken Felsberg a glacier, the Vadret digl Ela.
Valley is a Berguen Filisur the Albula Valley and Savognin and Tinizong in stone above. Frequent starting point for tours is the Ela hut in the lonely Val Spadlatscha.
Ela - hole ( Fora digl Ela )
About 30 m below the ridge, 160 m southeast of the summit, approximately 3'270 m above sea level. M. is the Ela - hole (Romansh Fora digl Ela ), an approximately 2.5 m high, 5-6 m wide and 3 m deep hole in the rock. Twice a year ( between 15th and 20th October at 15-16 clock CEST, and between 22 and 27 February at 14-15 clock CET), the sun shines through the hole on the village Berguen.
Likewise, the sun on August 10 seems early in the morning through the hole on the spring pasture Manziel to the municipality of Riom- Parsonz. This event is so so special because August 10 is the Laurentiustag, and the Church of Riom is under the patronage of Saint Lawrence of Rome.
According to legend, the hole was formed when the devil had thrown at the Eulenspiegel a stone after an argument. However, the stone missed and hit the Eulenspiegel instead of Piz Ela. In the dispute was about, that the Eulenspiegel had asked the devil on a potato field, if he wanted the fruits above or below the earth. When the devil chose for the Upper, the Eulenspiegel laughed at him. On the Kornacker presented the Eulenspiegel same question, which decided the devil this time for the fruits in the world.
Ela round trip
A well-known hike or ski tour for less experienced hikers is the Ela - round tour. The two-day tour starts in Berguen ( 1,367 m) or Filisur ( 1,032 m ) and performs on the first day of Ela Hut ( 2'252 m). On the second day, the tour over the Pass d' Ela ( 2'724 m), past mountain lakes Lai Lai Mort and Grond to Furschela because Tschitta ( 2'831 m) and then to Preda ( 1,789 m).
Time: 3 ½ - 4 ½ h and the first 5 hours on the second day.

Routes to the summit
The Alpstrasse of Tinizong in the Val d' Err is closed to the general motor vehicle traffic. However, a hiking bus on Tuesdays and Fridays from Savognin to Penza.
