Plateau

Plateau (also plateau, plateau or plateau, in the Spanish-speaking world Meseta ) denotes a flat or slightly hilly landscape or region that is significantly higher than the ambient or parts thereof.

In coastal regions, people are already talking from heights of about 200 m above sea level on a plateau when the relief energy on the plateau remains low, so the height differences that arise are irrelevant.

In offshore mountainous countries, however, high levels can also be located in several kilometers above sea level. Such plateaus can extend over several hundred kilometers (such as the highlands of Tibet) and densely populated with suitable climate to about 3000 m altitude.

In the North German Plain, the name plate has opted for high plateaus, which are only a few to a few tens of meters higher than the surrounding countryside, enforced.

Often, a plateau is bounded by mountain range - see Central Asia and South America - or interrupted by lowering central areas and sedimentary basins.

The summit region of a ridge can be called a plateau or plateau when the term Table Mountain is not appropriate because of the moderate slope of the hillsides.
