Plays Metallica by Four Cellos is the debut album by the Finnish cello rock band Apocalyptica.

Plays Metallica By Four Cellos appeared in 1996 on the record label Mercury Records and is the genre attributed Metal. They even prefer the title cello rock.

Genesis

Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen met at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki know and decided to play songs from their favorite band Metallica on the classic musical instrument cello. When testing at the Academy, they chose it in four pieces. Kari Hynninen, head of a small record company in Finland, was present at one of their concerts, and wanted to take the band under contract. Due to lack of money Apocalyptica were only in the early morning or late evening hours using the studio. The record company Mercury Records, which is also Metallica were under contract, showed interest in the band and made for a worldwide distribution of their debut album. All songs were originally performed by the band Metallica. The album sold 350,000 times worldwide and attracted the interest of the metal scene on the tape.
