Description and ecology

Vegetative characteristics

They are mostly herbaceous plants, but there are also woody plants: shrubs, rarely there are lianas ( climbing plants ). The family consists mainly of xerophytes that occur in semi-deserts and steppes of halophytes and near the beach.

Generative features

The flowers are borne in very differently constructed inflorescences. The hermaphrodite flowers are usually fünfzählig. There are two Blütenhüllblattkreise available. The five sepals are fused together into a fünfrippigen tube that ends in five calyx lobes, which are significantly shorter than the calyx tube. The five petals are fused or free; if they are free then they are nailed. It's just a circle with five fertile stamens present; they are usually free except for Aegialitis; they are epipetal, so standing in front of the petals, so it lacks the outer stamen circle. The five carpels are usually fused into a superior ovaries. There are one or five pens available. Pollination is mostly by insects ( entomophily ).

Are formed capsule fruits or nuts.
