Geography

The village is located along the Douro River, about 40 km east of the border with Spain. It is 8 km from the south county town of Vila Nova de Foz Côa and 62 km from the northern Macedo de Cavaleiros.

In Pocinho come in handy the districts of Guarda and Bragança with the circles Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Torre de Moncorvo together.

Transport and sights

Pocinho is part of the district of Vila Nova de Foz Côa lie in the two UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the oldest protected wine region in the world, Alto Douro, and the numerous archaeological excavations of the Archaeological Parque do Vale do Côa.

The heritage railway station Pocinho is now the terminus of the Linha do Douro. The railway bridge over the Douro is a listed building.

Near the village, the dam ( Portuguese: Barragem ) is Pocinho the Douro with a small harbor for inland waterway vessels with a maximum capacity of 300 tons of cargo. Fishing and water sports are practiced at the reservoir.

The arriving from south expressway IP2 (also European route E 802) ends in Pocinho and runs as a national road N215 on to northern Macedo de Cavaleiros.

Personalities

In 1962 the author and politician Francisco José Viegas was born in Pocinho.
