Broadleaf Steineibe ( Podocarpus latifolius )
The Broadleaf Steineibe ( Podocarpus latifolius ) is a flowering plant in the genus Podocarpus ( Podocarpus ) within the conifers ( Pinophyta ). It is native to South Africa where it is known Yellowwood. In German-speaking South Africa travel guides is described therefore as " yellowwood tree".
Dissemination
The home of broadleaf Steineibe located in the southern and eastern South Africa; their range extends from east to Western Cape KwaZulu -Natal and north to the Limpopo Province.
Description
The Broadleaf Steineibe is a slow-growing evergreen tree, reaching heights of growth of up to 35 meters with trunk diameters of up to 3 meters. The leaves are strip-shaped and about 3 to 4 cm, on young trees sometimes even up to 10 cm long with about 6 to 12 mm width. The fresh leaves emerge light green, whereas the older foliage is dark green.
The Broadleaf Steineibe is dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The aril of a coated seeds ripen in December-February; the aril then turns purple. The aril is edible and tastes sweet.
The hard yellow colored wood of this species is highly sought after; by overuse in the past, the natural resources have been significantly reduced.
