Pökoot (also Pokot, Päkot, Pökot and - in older literature - Suk ) is a western Kenya ( West Pokot and Baringo District) and in eastern Uganda ( Karamoja district ) of the ethnicity of the Pokot spoken südnilotische Kalenjin language.
1994 estimated the SIL, the number of speakers at 264,000, while in the only slightly younger estimate assumes 150,000 speakers ( Schladt 1997) - presumably based on Rottland (1982 ), who estimated the number of speakers to little more than 115,000.
Around the area of distribution of Pökoot following languages are spoken: the north ostnilotische language Ngakaramojong, northeast of the ostnilotische language Turkana, east of the Eastern Nilotic languages Maa (including Chamus ) and the south südnilotischen Kalenjin languages virtues and Markweta that are significantly influenced by Pökoot.
