Poling (horse)

The bullion is a controversial method of training to more cautious jumping horses or to educate higher jumping.

The purpose of the bars

While young horses that jumps can not estimate as well, tend to skip ( For high - jumping), older, more experienced horses usually limit to the required jump height. Since today, the jump conditions on which the upper bar is very flat, the top bar is very easy. In some horses this can be a problem, since they do not tighten the legs and make contact with obstacles in purchasing. Such horses can be performed at bars to higher jumping.

Active bars

After take-off of the horse, the upper bar is raised so that the horse strikes the rod. The horse jumps over a high obstacle, as it has seen the estimate of the jump. The horse learns to estimate the obstacle higher than it actually is. It is to animate better to tighten the legs, cautious and to jump higher.

The bar can either be lifted by two hidden helpers, or with the help of special, sometimes by Reiter, remote controlled jump conditions. It can be a normal obstacle rod of wood, a hollow aluminum rod, a hollow iron rod or a bamboo rod can be used. Said hollow rods cause other than the contact even an unusually loud noise, which causes the horse, in addition to higher jumps.

Criticism of the active bars It requires exceptionally good horse knowledge and a strong sense of responsibility to decide in which horse with which jump height and to what level of conditioning, the performance can be improved with the help of the bar. In addition, large experience is needed at the appropriate moment to raise the bar to the right level. Otherwise, the horse can be overwhelmed and scared ( except spring ), the horse can pain be inflicted, or the horse may be violated under certain circumstances. Incorrect assessment of the horse is already a gentle horse at heights that are pushed to its limits, gebarrt to wrest the animal even more power. On the other hand, the method can serve in a horse with a robust mood, low predisposition to caution and plenty of bounce reserves, to improve performance. The bar is not considered in equestrian sports as equestrian Hilfengebung, but only as a tool for conditioning.

The FEI prohibits tournament participants the active bars, but it is applied anyway. The FN prohibits tournament participants the active bars in training and on the showground. The active bar was also filmed secretly; stir attended in the early 1990s in Germany, especially television documentaries of the active Barrens of horses in the stable of Paul Schockemoehle. From the American Horse Shows Association ( AHSA ) in 1998, the active ingot was allowed with 5 cm thick, wrapped bamboo poles for national shows.

One of the earliest and most outspoken critics of the active bar was at the beginning of the 1970s the journalist Horst star in frame of the ARD television broadcast series " Star Hour" with his remarks on the horse.

Passive bars

In passive bar is the real obstacle rod a thinner metal rod, usually aluminum down. For horses, the metal rod is hard to make out. If they estimate the thick, colorful wooden pole on the jump, they tear the metal rod. Due to the unusual noise and possible pain the horse is also cautious. There is also the method to set up before or after (maximum 60 cm) the obstacle a second post with a thinner metal rod. So the jump curve can be influenced, depending on whether the horse forward or hindquarters tends errors.

Criticism of the passive bars There is no consensus about whether passive or active bullion bars is preferable. On one hand, the active bars human helpers with plenty of horse sense, which is rarely found, on the other hand can omit the bars a knowledgeable helper, for example if the Anreitphase was not optimal or an overtaxing of the horse is recognizable.

Blisters with chemical substances

Similar to the bars is the rubbing of the cannon bones with a sensitizing substance which does feel pain on contact with obstacles the horses. To avoid pain, they jump higher. This is also known as a chemical bullion or blisters. At the Olympic jumping competitions in 2008 in Hong Kong four jumpers were due to the application of the substance capsaicin, which, amongst other sensitizing effect, excluded, including the German show jumper Christian Ahlmann.

Criticism of the blisters The blister is prohibited as it inflicts unnecessary pain to the horses.

History

The bars goes back to a form of Springer drawing, in which not only the obstacle a trainer is available, the short with a bamboo stick or a whip touches the legs of the horse over the jump to draw the attention of the horse more on the leg position. This form of Springer draw is called a vehicle touches and is permitted. The vehicle touches is also applied in the dressage to show the horse which leg to lift it, for example, the Back up and circus lessons in liberty horses.
