Polybus of Corinth

Polybus (Greek Πόλυβος ), the son of Hermes and Chthonophyle, was in Greek mythology, king of Corinth and of Sicyon. He belongs to the Theban cycle of legends.

In his reign the discovery of a child falls. Because of his swollen feet it was called Oedipus ( Schwellfuß ). Shepherd found it in Cithaeron mountain and brought it to his wife Periboea ( According to Hyginus Mythographus she found herself the child on the sea). No matter how, because they were childless, they took it on and pulled it on as their own. Later they had their own daughters: Alkinoë, Lysianassa and amphitheater. Amphithea married Adrastus, king of Argos. When he was driven from his home, he fled to Polybus and after his death he took over the reign of the kingdom.

After Sophocles the wife of Polybus and Merope was nurse of Oedipus.

Eusebius of Caesarea writes to Polybus, depending on the tradition between 40 and 45 years of rule.
