Pont-d'Ouilly

Pont- d'Ouilly is a commune with 1016 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Calvados region of Basse -Normandie region.

Geography

Pont- d'Ouilly Set in the countryside Norman Switzerland, at the mouth of the river Noireau in the Orne. The town is located 40 kilometers south of Caen, 18 kilometers west of Falaise and twelve kilometers east of Condé- sur- Noireau. The municipality borders the neighboring Orne. The highest point of the municipality is the 252 meter high Mont- Pitois. The river Orne is in the north of the municipal district with a height of 42 meters, the lowest point.

Structure

Pont- d'Ouilly consists of the three formerly independent municipalities of Saint -Marc- d'Ouilly (Canton Thury -Harcourt ), Saint -Christophe and Ouilly -le- Basset (both Canton Falaise ) together. Saint -Christophe was the smallest of the three communities, was incorporated in 1826 after already Ouilly -le- Basset. At this time Ouilly -le- Basset was on the right bank of the Orne, Saint -Marc- d'Ouilly on the left. Also, because both communities were heavily damaged during the Second World War, they were merged on 23 August 1947.

Culture and sights

History

In January 1818 Pont- d'Ouilly was connected to the postal system. Three years later, in July 1821 a post office was established. This changed in 1881 their location. The phone came in 1905 to Pont- d'Ouilly. With the opening of the distance of the place Berjou to Caen on 15 May 1873, connected to the railway network. A year later, the route of Berjou was opened after Falaise in addition, but it has been shut down in 1969. Since February 25, 1892 Pont- d'Ouilly has its own fire department.

The first school in town was a Jesuit school, which was built in 1715. The public school of Ouilly -le- Basset opened in 1852, which took place from Saint -Marc- d'Ouilly 1877. Groundbreaking for the current school on 12 April 1953.

Churches

The Church of Sainte- Thérèse in the town center was built in 1925 on the site where there had been a chapel since the 12th century. In 1926 she was ordained and blessed on 16 October 1932. As the first church they bore the name of St. Therese of Lisieux. The church of Saint -Jean -Baptiste in the district Ouilly -le- Basset has existed since 1860 and then replaced an ancient chapel. It was created in 1889 and replaced an older church building from the 12th century. Also in Saint -Marc- d'Ouilly is the chapel of Saint -Roch. This chapel dating from the late 16th century was completely renovated in 1933. Paintings inside depict the life of St. Roch, which is dedicated to the chapel.

Bridges

The old bridge over the Orne was supported by eight arches and had until the 19th century inventory. She joined Ouilly -le- Basset with Saint -Marc- d'Ouilly. Between 1849 and 1851 a new bridge was built. This was only a little later, partially destroyed by a flood on October 5, 1852. The subsequently repaired bridge consisted of five arches. On 12 August 1944, the bridge was completely destroyed after it had previously been badly damaged. Already on August 19, British troops set a temporary bridge finished. In 1947 the work on the current bridge, which was officially opened on 17 May 1948.
