History

Originally, the town belonged to Villemanoche. 754 the place is called Pons Icaunae (from Latin pons, bridge ); meant was the settlement of a ( wooden ) bridge over the Yonne. In the 9th century, the Liber Sacramentorum the archbishops of Sens referred to the city as " Pontum ". Hence the name " Pont " developed. The old arch bridge of 1175 was reconstructed in the 17th century. It is named after its destruction in World War 2 only present in residues ( three arches ) and was replaced by a modern bridge.

1870-1873 was built at Pont -sur -Yonne Yonne about a 1.5 km-long bridge aqueduct as part of the 156 km long Vanne aqueduct by which the water of the Vanne Paris is supplied. The Brückenaquädukt of Pont- sur -Yonne consists of 156 sheets of 6 to 40 m span and should have been the world's first major building of mass stamped concrete. The first of the large arches had to be built also four times until the required strength was reached. ( After Stiglat )
