The Pontifical Lateran University (Latin: Pontificia Universitas Lateranensis, Italian: Pontificia Università Lateran ) is a University of pontifical right and has its headquarters in the city of Rome.

History

The Pontifical Lateran University was founded in 1773 by Pope Clement XIV as a faculty of theology and philosophy at the Collegio Romano, and thus formed the training facility for the clergy of the diocese of Rome after the Pontifical Gregorian University was the repeal of the Jesuit order temporarily closed in the same year. 1824 was the seat of the faculty by Pope Leo XII. moved to the Palazzo di Apollinare, where Pius IX in 1853 by. additionally established the Faculty of Canon Law and Civil Law and founded the Pontifical Institute utriusque iuris. The seat of the institution now known as the " Athenaeum Lateranense " was founded in 1958 by Pius XII. moved to its present location and in addition established a Pontifical Pastoral Institute. John XXIII. gave the university finally on 17 May 1959, the Motu Proprio Cum inde the name " Pontifical Lateran University ." 1981, Pope John Paul II at the University founded the " Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family" that has the right to award degrees " iure proprio ". Both John Paul II and Benedict XVI. underlined when visiting the meaning of the Lateran University as " University of the Pope" in his capacity as bishop of Rome.
