Pope Marcellus II

Marcellus II ( born May 6, 1501 Montefano (Trade ); † May 1, 1555 in Rome), born Marcello Cervini name, was from 9 April to May 1, 1555 Pope of the Catholic Church. Origin

Marcello Cervini was from Tuscany. His father was Ricardo Cervini. Marcello Cervini studied archeology, architecture, astronomy and mathematics in Siena.

Clerical career

On December 19, 1539, Pope Paul III. him a cardinal, his titular church was Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, shortly before he became bishop of Nicastro and a member of the Inquisition. Since 1545, he participated in several meetings of the Council of Trent as legate.

In 1548 he became cardinal librarian ( Bibliothecae Apostolicae Vaticanae Protector) of the Vatican Library. Under him the Vatican Library experienced a small flower, because he added the stock over 500 valuable books. He also had new library catalogs in Latin and Greek customize.

Pontificate

Coat of arms

Death
