Name

The mentioned by Ptolemy river Chronos was identified with the Pregel. To Gotenzeit the Pregel Skara was called. To Order times ( 1231: Lipz ) was the name of the river also Lipsa ( 1246: " Lipza " ): "Linden flow ". 1243 he is called " flumen pregore ". This name is interpreted linguistically different: After Peteraitis " fast, bold ," according to Vanagas " hell abyss " and after Gerullis "spurious way abyss." The name Pregel ( Old Prussian " preigillis ": at the low point ) first appears in the year 1302.

History and connections with other bodies of water

The Pregel occurs west of Tschernjachowsk ( Insterburg ) from the confluence of Instrutsch ( Inster ) and Angrapa ( Angerapp ) and flows west through the wide plains. He has over the Deima ( Deime ), which branches off at Gwardeisk ( Tapiau ) to connect to the Curonian Lagoon and on the Deime and Polesski channel ( Big Friedrichsgraben ) to connect to the Memel.

The river splits at Friedrich flintlock into two arms, the old Pregel or natangischen Pregel and north of it the new Pregel or Samland Pregel. Around the island Kneiphof the arms reunite.

The Pregel flows behind Kaliningrad (Königsberg ) in the Vistula Lagoon.

Importance for traffic

The river is navigable for its entire length. The importance of this waterway, however, since the completion of the railway line Kaliningrad - Insterburg waned in the 19th century.
