Premio Planeta de Novela

The Premio Planeta or Planeta Prize is the most lucrative literary award in the Spanish-speaking world and is next to the Premio Nadal as the most important prize for Spanish literature.

Competitions, prize money and History

After the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Premio Planeta with 601,000 euros (as of 2009) the world's second most lucrative literary prize. It is awarded annually since 1952 by the publishing house Editorial Planeta, a subsidiary of the Spanish media group Grupo Planeta, for the best unpublished novel in Spanish. The ceremony will take place in Barcelona every October. Authors must submit their manuscripts under a pseudonym, so that they are not known to the jury members. This process has led to the often previously unknown authors are excellent. Since 1974, also placed second novel will be provided with a cash prize; this is currently (2009) 150.250 euros.

The Premio Planeta 1952, donated by the publisher José Manuel Lara Hernández, founder of the Planeta publishing house. Since 1994 there is also a significantly lower doped Planeta Prize for Argentine literature.

Criticism

There are allegations that the Planeta publishing house take effect on the jury and not sufficiently take into account the literary quality.
