Prince Christian of Hesse-Darmstadt

Christian of Hesse- Darmstadt ( born November 25, 1763 in Buchsweiler, † April 17, 1830 in Darmstadt) was Landgrave of Hesse -Darmstadt and the house of Dutch general.

Life

Christian was the youngest son of Landgrave Ludwig IX. of Hesse- Darmstadt (1719-1790) and his wife Henriette Karoline (1721-1774), daughter of the Count Palatine and Duke Christian III. of Zweibrücken- Birkenfeld. He was a brother of Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hesse and by Rhine.

Landgraf Christian studied in Strasbourg and then chose a military career in the service of the Netherlands. As a lieutenant general, he fought from 1793 to 1794 for William V against the French and was severely wounded at the siege of Menen in April 1794. After the defeat in 1795, he emigrated first to England and continued the war against France later in the Austrian service continued. From 1799 he lived in Darmstadt, where he is buried in the Old Cemetery in Darmstadt.

Due to the constitution of the Grand Duchy of Hesse Prince Christian was from 1820 to 1830 member of the first chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse.

Landgraf Christian was an enthusiastic Freemason and Grand Master there.
