Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont

Princess Helene Friederike Auguste Waldeck and Pyrmont to VA ( born February 17, 1861 in Arolsen, † September 1, 1922 in background crack, Tyrol) was a German princess. She was a member of the British royal family through marriage.

Life

Helene was the fifth daughter of Prince Georg Viktor of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1831-1893) and his first wife Princess Helene of Nassau (1831-1888), daughter of Duke William I and his second wife, Princess Pauline of Württemberg. Helene's sister Emma was Queen since 1879 and since 1890, Regent of the Netherlands.

On April 27, 1882 married Princess Helene at Windsor Castle Prince Leopold of Great Britain and Ireland, 1st Duke of Albany ( 1853-1884 ), fourth and youngest son of Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort Albert of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha. From the brief happy marriage two children were born:

  • Alice Mary Victoria Augusta Pauline (1883-1981)
  • Leopold Carl Eduard Georg Albert, Duke of Albany and Duke of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha (1884-1954)

Her husband died on March 28, 1884 on the Côte d' Azur in Cannes, after a knee injury caused by a fall from a horse, from the consequences of its hemophilia. He was buried at Windsor Castle. Four months after his death, was their son Charles Edward to the world, since its birth was thus the 2nd Duke of Albany. After the death of her husband, Helen was living with her two children still at Claremont House.

When her brother, Duke Alfred of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha, on July 30, 1900, died without a male heir and his brother, Arthur Duke of Connaught, had renounced the succession because of his British Army career, was determined as the successor to her son, Carl Edward.

Because of her heart condition later dowager Helena spent a few weeks in the Austrian back crack, where she died on September 1, 1922. She was buried beside her husband in St. George Chapel at Windsor Castle.
