Princess Louise of Prussia (1770–1836)

Friederike Dorothea Luise of Prussia Philippine ( born May 24, 1770 in Berlin, † December 7, 1836 in Berlin) was a Prussian princess and by marriage Princess Radziwill.

Life

Louise was a daughter of the youngest brother of Frederick the Great, Prince Ferdinand (1730-1813) from his marriage to Louise (1738-1820), daughter of Margrave Frederick William of Brandenburg- Schwedt. Louise was a sister of Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia; Various sources suggest that her biological father was more of Count Friedrich Wilhelm Carl von Schmettau.

She married on 17 March 1796 in Berlin not evenly matched and the Catholic Polish magnate Anton Radziwill ( 1775-1833 ), Prince of Nieswiez and Olyka. The marriage with the composing princes who sat by the princess described as energetic, designed to be happy. After the battle of Jena and Auerstedt Luise had fled in 1806 to the Prussian court to Königsberg and belonged here, together with Queen Louise and Princess Marianne, to the patriotic, anti-French circle, who worked on a restoration of the Prussian state. Luise used friendships with Barthold Georg Niebuhr, Dorothea of Courland, Wilhelm von Humboldt, August Neidhardt von Gneisenau, Carl von Clausewitz and Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein. The dismissal of the latter, she complained bitterly and was instrumental in its re-establishment.

Together with her husband she received in her house, the Radzwill Palace on Wilhelmstrasse, many artists and scholars with whom she associated with no courtly etiquette rules and from 1796 to 1815 maintained a salon.

From 1816 she lived in Poznan, where her husband served as a Prussian governor of the Grand Duchy. She founded here feeding the poor and the Institute of Elisabethanerinnen. While the children were raised Catholic, grew Louise's daughters as her mother in the Protestant faith.
