Princess Mafalda of Savoy

Mafalda Maria Elisabetta Anna Romana, Princess of Savoy ( born November 19, 1902 in Rome, † August 27 1944 in the Buchenwald concentration camp ) was a daughter of King Victor Emmanuel III. of Italy and his wife Princess Elena of Montenegro.

Life

In honor of her birth, the community Ripalta sul Trigno was renamed in 1903 in Molise Mafalda. The 1909 entered service in passenger ship Principessa Mafalda of the Italian shipping company Lloyd Italiano was named after her. Mafalda married in 1925 Philipp Prinz von Hessen ( 1896-1980 ).

After Mafalda's father on July 25, 1943 Benito Mussolini was stripped of office, Hitler sent eight divisions to Italy to take possession of the government. King Victor Emmanuel III. could go with his family to the protection of the Allies. In revenge, Hitler had Princess Mafalda in Rome lure on 23 September 1943, a pretext to the German Embassy and deported from there without further explanation directly to the concentration camp Buchenwald. She was there placed in a special barrack together with the couple Breitscheidstraße. During a bombing attack by the USAAF on 24 August 1944, she was buried. She survived with serious injuries and burns. Her arm was amputated too late, so that she died three days later. On the evening of 27 August, she was buried in Weimar in grave 262 in the cemetery register was " unknown woman ". She was ultimately buried in Kronberg im Taunus.
