Princess Marie of Waldeck and Pyrmont

Georgine Henriette Marie Princess of Waldeck and Pyrmont (* May 23, 1857 in Arolsen, † April 30, 1882 in Ludwigsburg ) was the first wife of the future King William II of Württemberg, a Princess of Württemberg.

Life

Marie was the daughter of Prince Georg Viktor of Waldeck and Pyrmont and Princess Helene of Nassau and thus a sister of the Dutch Queen Emma and the last reigning Prince Friedrich of Waldeck- Pyrmont. She married on 15 February 1877 in Arolsen Prince William of Württemberg. This marriage was descended from the first-born daughter Pauline (1877-1965), who in 1898 with Prince Hermann Friedrich married to Wied ( 1872-1945 ).

Princess Marie's second maternity ended tragically, as born in Ludwigsburg on July 28, 1880 son of Ulrich few months later, on December 28, 1880, died in Stuttgart. The death of this prince later became a political issue, because Ulrich was the only son of King William II and therefore the succession to the throne would have fallen by the Protestant line to the Catholic line of the House of Württemberg, if the November Revolution of 1918 had it not prevented. The unpleasant for the evangelical Altwürttemberger idea to be governed in the future by a Catholic king, in whose circles led to the rumor that Ulrich had fallen victim to a Catholic assassination plot. This certainly untenable thesis raises at least a spotlight on the deep-seated prejudices that characterized the relationship between the two major denominations each other in Württemberg long time. Princess Marie died in April 1882 from the effects of a stillbirth in the puerperium. She was buried at the old cemetery in Ludwigsburg.
