Procol Harum Live in Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is the first live album by British progressive rock band Procol Harum. It was released in April 1972 and reached number 5 in the U.S. charts. It was thus the most successful album of the band in the USA.
Formation
In August 1971, Procol Harum, who had already worked in Canada in 1969 with a Symphony Orchestra, Da Camera Singers invited by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and The, to give together with them at the end of their North American tour concert. The general conditions were not favorable - guitarist Robin Trower had left the band and was replaced by Dave Ball, Gary Brooker wrote the arrangements for Conquistador only shortly before the plane, so that this piece could not be rehearsed. The concert in filled with 3000 listeners Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton was held on 18 November 1971. Procol Harum, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Da Camera Singers were given under the direction of Lawrence Leonard such a roaring applause that almost the whole program was played a second time.
In 1991 there was the 20 -year anniversary, a reunion concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Greenwood Singers.
Reception
Wrote Bruce Eder of Allmusic that the selection of the most ambitious pieces from the repertoire of the band and the presence of the orchestra Procol Harum can appear more progressive than they actually were. He gave the album four out of five stars.
