Progo River

Progo is an approximately 138 km long river on the Indonesian island of Java. It rises north of Sundoro volcano and flows into the Indian Ocean. The Progo flows through the provinces of Jawa Tengah ( Central Java to German ) and Yogyakarta.

The source is located on the slopes of the volcano Sundoro to the north he makes a bow. Near the city Temanggung he then flows past in a southerly direction to Magelang and the Keduebene, the cradle of ancient civilizations on Java. Near the temples of Borobudur, Mendut Pawon and its main tributary flows into the Elo Progo. Shortly thereafter, he continues to flow to Yogyakarta, where he then flows into the Indian Ocean.

The river is located in a 4077 square kilometer area, which also includes the two rivers Serang and Okap belong. There live about 5.4 million inhabitants.

Many of its right tributaries, as Kedu, Gintung, Klegung, Semawang and Tangsi, spring on the slopes of the 3320 meter high volcano Sumbing, the left tributaries Elo, Pabelan, Blongkeng, Batang and Krasak, arise at the two volcanoes Merapi and Merbabu.

The area around the river was the scene of battles of the Indonesian national heroes Diponegoro against the Dutch colonialists in the great rebellion of 1825-1830.

The water of the river is used for irrigation. Tourist of the Progo is used for rafting.

Sand is mined mainly in the lower river.
