Magelang is a city in Indonesia on the island of Java, with about 118,000 inhabitants.

Geography

Magelang is the largest city in the Keduebene and in the same government district, located in the province of Central Java.

The city is situated between several partially over 3000 meters high volcanoes. West is the Sumbing and east of the three volcanoes Telomoyo, Merbabu and Merapi.

Yogyakarta is located about 40 kilometers south of the provincial capital Semarang about 60 kilometers to the north and Jakarta, less than 400 kilometers to the west. The river Progo flows to the west past the city towards the Indian Ocean.

Magelang has divided the city status ( Indonesian Kota ) and is divided into three districts ( Kecamatan ) Nordmagelang ( Magelang Utara ), Südmagelang ( Magelang Selatan ) and Zentralmagelang ( Magelang Central Java ), which each have a number of villages ( Desa ).

History

The city was founded on 11 April 907. In the vicinity is historically the ancient Buddhist temple Borobudur.

The freedom fighters Diponegoro was arrested here during the Java War.

Facilities

Since the colonial era, when the city belonged to the Dutch East Indies, Magelang is Military location. There is a military academy and a military high school in the city, as well as several universities.
