The Providence Atoll is an atoll in the Indian Ocean, which belongs to the so-called Outer Islands of the Republic of Seychelles. It is the larger of the two members of the Farquhar Group and atolls located about 710 km southwest of Mahé, the main island of the Seychelles.

Geography

The Providence Atoll extends in a north-south direction over more than 30 km and is located in east -west direction up to 10 km wide. The land area of the atoll is only 1.5 km ², including the surface of the lagoon, however, about 200 km ². There are no natural sources of fresh water. To Atoll alongside some sandbanks are two islands that only a few meters rise above the sea surface:

  • Providence Iceland in the far north of the atoll (at 9 ° 13 ' 25 "S, 51 ° 1' 53 " O 9.223611111111151.031388888889 ) is 4 km long and up to 400 m wide, with an area of just over one square kilometer. In the south of the island is a small settlement with only six residents.

Approximately 30 km west of Providence Iceland is likewise belonging to the Farquhar Group island of Saint- Pierre.
