Providencia (Latin providentia " foresight " ) is a genus of gram-negative, flagellated peritrich, facultative anaerobic rod-shaped bacteria. Characteristic is the indole - positive reaction and the urease formation. They are ubiquitous, but are mainly present in the digestive tract. Providencia were detected in diarrheal diseases, urinary tract infections, burns, wound infections and bacteremia. Providencia are important nosocomial pathogens ( " hospital bugs ") esp. after surgery in the urogenital tract. They also are considered opportunistic pathogens and are naturally resistant to the antibiotics ampicillin sulbactam ±, amoxicillin ± clavulanic acid, first-generation cephalosporins, colistin, tetracyclines, tigecycline and nitrofurantoin ..
