Provinces of Afghanistan
Afghanistan is divided into 34 provinces ( velayat ), each of which a governor ( waali ) projects, which is appointed or confirmed by the central government in Kabul.
On April 13, 2004 was the last restructuring of the provinces. Were newly created while the last Panjshir provinces, Daikondi, Khost, Kunar, Nuristan and Sar -i Pul. The provinces themselves are in turn subdivided into smaller areas, called districts.
The population figures given in the table are estimates from 2007 to 2008.
