Prudente de Morais

Prudente José de Morais Barros e ( born October 4, 1841 in Itu, São Paulo, † December 3, 1902 in Piracicaba, São Paulo) was a Brazilian politician and from 15 November 1894 to the November 15, 1898 Third President of Brazil. He was the first civilian who was head of state in Brazil.

Life

He was elected through direct and general election. During his tenure, the War of Canudos between 1896 and 1897 falls, the city located in the Sertão in the state of Bahia Canudos was destroyed and there was a massacre of the inhabitants. The war reflects the rival political concepts at the beginning of the Brazilian Republic.
