PSA TU engine

The PSA TU engines are a series of small four- cylinder inline engines that are used in various Peugeot and Citroen cars. The engine was introduced in 1986 with the launch of the Citroën AX, he replaced the X - series, where he has many components with its predecessor together. The TU there is either a petrol or diesel version, which is called TUD to distinguish. The performance of the TU engines ranging from 40 to 125 hp (29 to 92 kW ). The petrol versions have 1360 or 1527 cm ³ engine displacements of 954, 1124, 1294, 1360 or 1587 cc diesel.

The TU engine is / was used in the following vehicles.

  • Peugeot: 106, 205, 206, 207, 309, 306, 307, 405, Bipper, Partner and Hoggar.
  • Citroën: AX, Saxo, C2, C3, C4, BX, ZX, Xsara, C15, Nemo and Berlingo
  • Fiat: Fiorino
  • Proton Tiara

The TUD engine was used only in ten models, six of which did not come from the PSA Group.

  • Peugeot: 106
  • Citroën: AX, Saxo,
  • Nissan: Micra
  • Maruti Suzuki Zen D, D Esteem
  • IKCO: Samand.
  • Proton Tiara
  • Rover: 114D Mini Metro 100

Name, Code

Each TU engine is marked with a version code, for example TU3MC ( KDX ), which is stamped on a riveted aluminum plaque.

The label shall contain the following information:

  • The fuel used, which is indicated by the first two or three letters: TU (petrol ) or TUD ( diesel).
  • The first number is the hundreds digit of the displacement: 1360 cm ³ TU3 therefore available for gasoline engine.

The remaining letters or numbers in the series contain additional information:

  • M indicates that the fuel is injected from an electronic Monopoint fuel injection (single injector).
  • C shows an electronic ignition without distributor. ( "Dormant " ignition system )
  • F indicates that the engine block from cast iron.
  • A change (A for "improved" ) a previous version.
  • S is a sporty version with a higher power than the base engine.
  • Y indicates that the fuel of an electronic multi-port fuel injection, having four fuel injectors (one for each cylinder) is supplied. J immediately followed by a 2 (" J2" ) shows two valves per cylinder ( eight in total), if a four ( "D4 " or " JP4 ") follows, this indicates the presence of 16 valves ( four per cylinder ) on.
  • P stands for a controlled carburetor.
  • 2 or 0.2 shows a carburetor with two throttle valves.
  • 4 or 0.4 shows a dual carburetors.
  • TR shows a version with a reduced compression ratio.
  • K means without catalyst.
  • Z means with catalyst.

TU9

The TU 954 cc was the engine with the smallest displacement. Its bore is 70 mm with a stroke of 62 mm. There are five versions. His power is 40 hp ( 29 kW ), 45 hp ( 33 kW) or since the introduction of electronic fuel injection with catalyst 1992 50 hp (37 kW). He equipped the entry-level versions of the Citroen AX, Peugeot 205, Peugeot 106 and Citroen Saxo. The normal compression ratio was 9.4. Production ceased at the Citroen Saxo and Peugeot 106 since the entry into force of the European emission standard Euro III on 1 January 2001.

TU1

The TA1 has a displacement of 1124 cc with a bore of 72 mm and a stroke of 69 mm. The power was initially 55 hp ( 40.5 kW ), but with the introduction of electronic fuel injection and catalyst in 1992 it was 60 hp ( 44 kW) increase. The introduction of multi-point injection led to comply with the Euro 3 standards with consistent performance, there was only a small increase in torque. This engine is since 2009 the entry level model for Citroën C2 and C3 and Peugeot 206

TU24

The TU24 has a displacement of 1294 cc with a bore of 75 mm and a stroke of 73.2 mm. The power was 95 hp (70 kW ) for the Citroen AX Sport, as well as for the Peugeot 205 rally in a slightly stronger version of 103 hp (76 kW) with a shorter intake manifold for a more direct air intake. A new version with electronic Magneti Marelli injection and a catalyst (100 hp ( 74 kW) ) was developed in 1992 for the Peugeot 106 Rallye.

TU3

The TU3 has a displacement of 1360 cc with a bore of 75 mm and a stroke of 77 mm. At the beginning there were also versions with a single or dual carburetors. Electronic fuel injection was introduced in 1990 for the Citroen AX GTI and Peugeot 106 XSI, they cared for the increase to 100 hp ( 73.5 kW) at 6600 min -1. Models with carburetor gave way in 1992 to the versions with electronic fuel injection, while the Sport versions were adopted in 1996.

TU5

The TU5 has a displacement of 1587 cc with a bore of 78.5 mm and a stroke of 82 mm. There are versions with eight and with 16 valves. The capacity ranges from 90 hp (66 kW) to 125 hp ( 92 kW). The TU5 was used by both Citroën and Peugeot in motorsport.

TUD

The TUD was the diesel variant. He first used the cylinder housing of the TU3 with 1,360 cc ( bore 75 mm, stroke 77 mm ) and was therefore called TUD3, but in 1994 the engine capacity was increased with a bore of 77 mm and a stroke of 82 mm to 1527 cc, and renamed to TUD5. It gave him a Bosch or Lucas injection pump. In addition to some small-car models of the PSA Group (AX, Saxo, 106 ), he was also sold to other car manufacturers, who did not have small diesel engines. So it was used, for example, from 1993 to the end of production in 1998 Rover Metro. The diesel versions of the second generation of the Nissan Micra in Europe had this engine.
