White Höswurz ( Pseudorchis albida )

The White Höswurz ( Pseudorchis albida ), also known as White tongue or Weißzüngel, one next to the green hollow tongue ( Coeloglossum viride ) and the dwarf -leaved ( Chamorchis alpina) to the typical orchids of mountain meadows.

Description

The slender, perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of growth between 10 to 40 cm. The three to seven leaves are distributed on the stem, the lower ones are oblong- ovate to oblong- lanceolate.

The inflorescence is narrow - cylindrical, dense and floriferous. The bloom are helmet-shaped together eigend. The lip is deeply three-lobed, the middle lobe are tongue- shaped and the lateral lobes usually tapered and narrower than the middle lobe. The spur is 2-3 mm long. Bloom time is from June to August.

Occurrence

As the site acidophilous poor grass, pasture grass and dwarf shrub companies are preferred by the under montane to alpine altitude level. In Austria it is scattered to moderately frequent, but lacking in Burgenland and Vienna.

Very rare hybrids with Gymnadenia conopsea, Gymnadenia odoratissima and Nigritella rhellicani forming.
