Description

Appearance and leaves

Ptilotus species grow as rare annual to perennial mostly herbaceous plants, subshrubs or shrubs. Often a woody " rhizome " is available. The aboveground plant parts are hairy bare to slightly fluffy or woolly. The arranged in a basal rosette and / or alternate distributed on the stem leaves are petiolate to sessile.

Inflorescences, flowers and diasporas

The mostly terminal, sometimes lateral, seated or standing on Blütenstandsschäften inflorescences are ährig, spherical, ovoid, more or less cylindrical, rarely they are interrupted or composed; which usually many flowers are tight. The inflorescence axis is hairy woolly. The often brightly colored inflorescences range from shimmering white on silver and greenish- yellow to mauve, purple or pink. The often tough outer leaves and the flower two bracts are usually ovate with a sharp tip, trockenhäutig, hairy bald or different.

The hermaphrodite flowers are fünfzählig. The five different outside feathery or woolly hairy, more or less linealischen, stiff bracts are free or only short fused at their base. It is only the outer circle available with five stamens, of which are often reduced to one to three staminodes. The stamens are usually slightly shorter than the bracts and usually fused at their base to a membranous, hard cup, occasionally with small teeth alternating with the stamens. The sedentary or short -stalked ovary contains a hanging ovule.

As propagation unit ( diasporas ) are the wrapped lasting bloom cladding of the seeds ( small nuts ); this expansion unit is called the utricle. The bloom verkahlen to fruit maturity.

Occurrence

The more than 90 species thrive almost all originally in arid to semi-arid ( drier ) areas of the mainland to the subtropical to tropical Australia. Only one species ( Ptilotus spathulatus ) also comes in Tasmania before and one species ( Ptilotus conicus ), also in southern Malaysia's on the Small Sunda Islands (Flores, Roti, Timor, Wetar ) and the Southern Moluccas ( Tanimbarese, Key ) is encountered. For example, occur about 80 species and in New South Wales about 22 species in Western Australia.
