Pueblo Viejo, Salta

Pueblo Viejo (Spanish for Old Village ) is a small village in the department Iruya Salta Province in northwestern Argentina. It is located near the village Iruya and is connected via the unpaved road Ruta Provincial 165 - S with the 3 km south of it the district of Campo Carreras of the neighboring village Rodeo Colanzulí.

The village belongs to the Finca Santiago, the first community property in Argentina and has about 190 inhabitants ( 2001 census). This represents an increase of 12.5 % compared to the 1991 census (168 inhabitants). The place thrives on agriculture, mainly small animal husbandry, and tourism. There is a small arts and crafts business.

In the center is the school " Congreso de Tucumán " ( escuela N º 4143 ), an infirmary and in the 1990s, rebuilt by the local residents chapel.

According to historical records, Pueblo Viejo is the oldest village in the department Iruya. It is believed that the first inhabitants settled in the region here.

Access

A part of the route to Pueblo Viejo can travel from Iruya from the bus on the Ruta 133. The bus stops at the station Toroyoc, located about 6 km from Iruya.

From there, on the opposite side of the river from a non -signposted and not identifiable without further passage from ( location: 22 ° 50 ' S, 65 ° 14' W 22.840138888889 - 65.2258333333333720 ), a steep footpath in about half an hour up to the village.

Alternatively can be achieved Pueblo Viejo on the adjacent Campo Carreras along the dirt road Ruta Provincial 165 -S. During the months of November to April, this is often only possible on foot or all-terrain vehicles, as parts of the track may be under water.
