Iruya Department

The department Iruya located in the north of the province of Salta in northwestern Argentina in the high basin of the river Bermejo. It is one of 23 administrative units in the province.

In the north Iruya adjacent to the Department of Santa Victoria, to the east and south by the department of Oran and the west by the Department of Humahuaca Jujuy Province.

The capital of the department is the eponymous village Iruya.

Cities and Towns

The department Iruya is divided into two municipalities ( municipios ) Iruya and Isla de Cañas.

Population

In the department Iruya live more than 70 communities of Indians belonging to the tribe of collagen.

According to the last census, the Departamento Iruya 6,370 inhabitants ( INDEC, 2001). According to estimates by the INDEC, the population has increased to 7,965 inhabitants in 2005.

Climate

The climate ranges from cool mountain climate in the west to subtropical climate in the east.
