Puntigrus

Tiger barb

Puntigrus is a genus of small Southeast Asian carp (Cyprinidae ). The genus was erected in November 2013 by the Swiss ichthyologists Maurice Kottelat for five to six species of Southeast Asian barbels, which were previously assigned to the genus Puntius. The generic name Puntigrus consists of Puntius and " tigris " ( for Tiger) together and refers to the striped pattern of the fish.

Features

Puntigrus - types have a high-backed, diamond-shaped body of brighter, more or less yellowish color and is associated with other early Southeast Asian Puntius barbs distinguished by their four black horizontal stripes on the body sides. The first strip is located above the eyes, the second in front of the pelvic fin base, the third on the anal fin ( he sits down on the dorsal fin continuous ) and the fourth at the beginning of the caudal fin.

The last unbranched dorsal fin ray is cut back. The lateral line is complete or incomplete. When present it extends over 18 to 23 scales with pores. Between the lateral line scales and the base of the dorsal fin to count 3 to 4 ½ scale rows in front of the pelvic fin base each 5 ½ scale rows between the lateral line scales and the abdominal midline. 12 to 14 scales are built around the caudal peduncle. Rostralbarteln missing, maxillary barbels are present. The lips are smooth and thin. On the first branchial arch, there are 8-9 gill rakers.
