Purulhá

Purulhá is a municipality in the department of Baja Verapaz in Guatemala. In the 248 km ² large municipality about 37,000 people live, most of them in Purulhá, the other in five other villages and 28 hamlets.

Location

Purulhá located in the north of the department of Baja Verapaz on the overland road from Guatemala City to Coban in Alta Verapaz to about 1,570 m altitude in a cloud forest. It is also located near the Nature Reserve Biotopo Mario Dary Rivera.

The municipality is bordered to the south by Salamá and to the north by the department of Alta Verapaz.

Economy

Purulhá has a well developed agriculture, the main products are coffee, cardamom, maize, beans and sugar cane. Also plays an important role in livestock. The little craft manufacture textiles and basketry. Purulhá benefited from through traffic by Coban and by visitors to the nearby nature reserve.

History

The origins of Purulhá are unclear. Probably founded settlers the place to 1809., It was first officially mentioned under the name of San Antonio Purulhá in 1836, and later accounted for the name of the patron. Purulhá means in the Mayan language " boiling water ".
