Puteaux Group

The Puteaux Group was a loose grouping of various European artists (see list below) formed, which was in close contact with Cubism. The group was formed in 1911, when the parties met regularly to discuss the house of Jacques Villon in Puteaux ( 7 rue Lemaître ) to exchange their views on the Cubist works of Braque and Picasso. The meetings were held until 1914.

The group was known by a much-discussed show at the Salon des Independants in the spring of 1911 (see → Cubism / Puteaux group).

The group's name was chosen by themselves, to distinguish themselves at the same time against the works of Picasso and Braque. Faced with the cubist paintings, the artists were touched aesthetic. They contrived very soon theories to show why they were impressed by the pictures. So they tried the Cubist Braque and Picasso's world, to give reasons for its harmony and aesthetics scientifically. In collaboration with the active as a painter, illustrator and art writer Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger wrote the theoretical treatise you cubisme ( About Cubism ), the 1912 Publisher Figuière appeared in Paris. Both emphasize in this work the difference to the so-called Galeriekubisten Picasso and Braque. To be named as representatives of cubism only the artists of the Puteaux Group.

The work Robert Delaunay in 1912 were by Guillaume Apollinaire called Orphism (see → Orphism ).

Marcel Duchamp submitted a 1912 Nu descendant un escalier his picture no 2 ( Nude, Descending a Staircase No. 2) in the Salon des Independants, where it was rejected by the other members of the group. In art history, it is considered one of the key works of 20th-century painting, as it includes the new aspirations of Futurism.
