Quality Street (1937 film)

Quality Street is a love story from 1937 by RKO Radio Pictures, in 1937 under the title started off in Austria In quiet streets. It was directed by George Stevens and produced the film of Pandro S. Berman. The film is set in England in the 19th century and based on the eponymous comedy by JM Barrie in the year 1901. The screenplay was implemented by Allan Scott, Mortimer Offner and Jack Townley. The main characters are Katharine Hepburn and Franchot Tone. There is no mention in the credits of the appearance of a young Joan Fontaine, who had just signed only at RKO Radio Pictures.

Action

1805 are few and far between bachelors in Quality Street. The twenty -year-old Phoebe Throssel is noisy, as one of them, Dr. Valentine Browne tell her something important wants. Both she and her older sister Susan believe that he wants to make one of them a request. But it is different: Brown stated that he had volunteered to fight for his country during the Napoleonic Wars. Susan hides her desperation and Dr. Brown does not realize that Susan is in love with him. You now no longer believes that they will ever get married. In contrast, thinks the maid Patty, no beauty and a bit dated, that they can do it.

In the next ten years, the Throssels conduct a school for young girls and boys. When Dr. Brown returns the rank of captain after a long time, he invites the sisters to a ball. But when he makes an inappropriate remark about Phoebe's appearance, these declines.

To distract himself puts Phoebe from their everyday clothes and slips into a beautiful ball gown. As Brown sees this chance, claiming Patty, if it were Phoebe's niece Livy. He invites her to the ball and Phoebe agrees. Secretly, she forges a plan for an application that refuse to get back at Brown.

At the ball, Phoebe is swarmed by many admirers. In the days after the ball, they arranged to meet up with all these men. At a picnic with Brown it starts to rain. Brown by contributing to Salettl, but instead now to confess his love, he blames them for her flighty behavior and declared to be in love with Phoebe.

The next day, the Willougbys to visit that have long suspected that Livy and Phoebe are the same person. When Brown comes along, they express this suspicion. He is Patty to task and this finally confesses her lie. Finally, Brown acts as if he would create Livy in a large piece of luggage home, to deceive the curious neighbors. It shall send a sergeant and Patty, which are a pair now, with " Livy " away so the two can spend some time together. Brown finally goes into the house and hugged Phoebe.

Background

In 1927 was filmed with Marion Davies and Conrad Nagel starring Sidney Franklin, a silent film of the same name for Metro -Goldwyn- Mayer.

The film flopped at the box office and the studio lost 248,000 U.S. dollars. Thus, Quality Street is one of the few films starring Katherine Hepburn, who were considered box-office poison. The film was rarely shown in the U.S. television until TCM administer to the film. Meanwhile, there is also a US-DVD by Warner Archive.

Roy Webb's score was nominated in 1938 for an Oscar.
