Santiago de Querétaro (short: Querétaro ) is a city in central Mexico with approximately 877 837 inhabitants ( 2003) and the capital of the state of the same name. It is assumed that the name is a derivative of k'eri Ireta rho. In the language of the Otomi, whose settlements were here in Aztec times, it means "place of many people."

The city is known for its colonial architecture and the old town since 1996 a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It plays an important role in Mexican history. The Casa de la Corregidora, which was built in 1770 by Doña Josefa Ortíz house, called La Corregidora (ie wife of a senior Spanish colonial officials ), was a conspiratorial meeting place for the leaders of the independence movement around 1810.

1867 Emperor Maximilian was here firing squad after the French intervention in Mexico had with the last battles found in Querétaro end. This is also the first constitution was drafted in 1917 by the Mexican Revolution.

Culture

Santiago de Querétaro is the seat of the Diocese of Querétaro and the universities: Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro ( UAQ ), Centro de Investigacion y Interdisciplinario Docencia en Educación Técnica ( CIIDET ), Escuela Normal del Estado de Querétaro ( ENEQ ) and Universidad Anáhuac de Querétaro.

On the edge of town is the Colegio Mexicano Austríaco, an Austrian school abroad.

Sports

In Estadio La Corregidora found 1986 four World Cup matches held in football. Among others, the German team wore there all their group matches.
