Rabbi Yannai

Rabbi Yannai (also: Jannaj ) was a of Palestinian amora of the first generation ( about 230-250 AD), who was equally important both in the field of Halacha and the Aggadah.

Yannai was the father of Rabbi Dostai, father of Ammi and probably lived in Sepphoris. He founded not far from Sepphoris, in Akbara (south of Safed ), a Beit Midrash ( debe R. Jannaj or Beth R. Jannaj ), he - he was very wealthy - even entertained.

Yannai was a student and teacher of Chijjas Yochanan ( Pallet Kil VIII, 1;. Jew b 92b, .. Ber 30b;. Tanch to Schofetim. ) And probably also by Resch Lakish.

He was known primarily as a participant in a controversy over alleged writings of King Solomon and their sequence, during which he argued that the book of Ecclesiastes that was last written by Solomon.

Characteristic of Yannai following his many sayings:

  • " Woe to him who still has no home and already the gate makes the apartment " ( ie one in which not the fear of God precedes the Torah b Sabb 31b.. ).
  • " Man shall not bring in the hope of a miracle in danger" ( b. Sabb. 32a).
  • As Yannai once saw someone publicly handed a gift to a poor man, he said: "It would be better if you had given him nothing, than that you shame him" ( b. Chag 5a. ).

Jannai probably reached a ripe old age and had some sons, of whom he wished to be buried in colorful dresses, either in white or in black ( white clothes would be inappropriate, he should be found guilty, black would be inappropriate, it should do justice to be perceived and then be a mourner among bridegrooms - bSabb 114a). .

To distinguish him from his grandson of the same name (R. Yannai Ze'ira ) he was also called Sabba ( the old man ).
