Rabo de Peixe (German: Fishtail) is a Portuguese parish ( freguesia ) in a circle ( concelho ) of Ribeira Grande on the Azores island of São Miguel. 8883 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

The island of São Miguel was taken in 1439 by the Portuguese crown in possession. Rabo de Peixe was probably inhabited from 1490 for the first time by the Flemish and Moorish permanently. After the first settlers lived primarily from grazing livestock, fishing an important economic factor was fast. On the origin of the curious village name circulate various legends, but is considered likely that the shape of the headland jutting into the sea here was the starting point.

2004 Rabo de Peixe raised to the small town ( Vila ).

Culture and sights

In addition to various religious buildings include in the community also erected in 1712 mansion Solar de São Sebastião and the club house of musical association Sociedade Filarmónica Progresso do Norte to the monuments.

The historic center of Rabo de Peixe also as a whole is under monument protection.

In the village of Santana is the Observatório Astronómico de Santana, Açores ( OASA ), a planetarium. In Santana also an airport, who served the Allies in World War II, and in 1946 the first civilian airport of the island was. After the opening of Ponta Delgada airport in 1969, the airport was decommissioned.
