Rachel de Queiroz

Rachel de Queiroz ( born November 17, 1910 in Fortaleza, Brazil, † November 4, 2003 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian writer.

In 1915 she fled from the drought areas of the Northeast of Brazil with her family to Rio de Janeiro, but returned to study in their home state of Ceará back. In 1927 she began working as a journalist and published in 1930 her first novel O Quinze ( "The Year 15") in which they processed the experience of drought. In 1931 she again went to Rio, where she joined the Communist Party. They also wrote for numerous newspapers and magazines, including O Cruzeiro.

In addition to her narrative work Queiroz published several plays, and numerous volumes of essays. In 1977 she became the first writer member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras.
